Composition, fabric weight and width
Composition tells you which raw materials are used. Fabric weight describes the mass of material per square metre, while roll width helps you plan the cutting layout and the quantity needed for the upholstery.
A higher fabric weight does not automatically mean better quality. A heavier material may behave differently during sewing and shaping, so consider these figures alongside the construction and your project’s needs.
Check whether the figures refer to the surface material or the finished combination with its backing. If the data sheet does not make this clear, ask the supplier for clarification.
Abrasion resistance and colour fastness
An abrasion test result relates to a particular method and set of test conditions. It does not directly indicate how many years the upholstery will last. Compare it with the project requirements and the material’s other properties.
In a car, resistance to light or UV and colour fastness to rubbing may also matter. Look for this information in the collection’s documentation.
Compare like with like
Results obtained using different methods or for different versions of a material cannot always be compared without further explanation.
Flexibility, backing and thickness
The backing affects the finished construction of the material. Foam can change its thickness and softness, while a technical knitted backing can affect its behaviour during sewing and fitting.
A table cannot tell you everything. A shaping, bonding or sewing trial will help you check how the final version behaves in your application.
You can read more about these differences in our guide to lamination and backing.
Documentation for the specific product
If your project requires particular tests or certificates, check that the document applies to the exact collection and version. The word “automotive” alone does not confirm the required properties.
Check the material name or product code, the scope of the document and how the tested version is identified. Tell your adviser about the project requirements before placing an order.
